With the development of society, building materials are also constantly innovating. Gypsum products are comprehensively utilized in construction due to their excellent properties such as light weight, fire resistance, sound insulation, heat insulation, and simple construction, as well as prefabrication, simple and environmentally friendly on-site installation.

Sodium hexametaphosphate is mainly used as a retarder in gypsum building materials such as painting gypsum, bonding gypsum, gypsum putty, and gypsum products, mainly to reduce the setting speed of gypsum.


What is gypsum retarder?

Gypsum retarder types are white or brown, powdery, easily soluble in water, and are composed of polyhydroxy compounds, hydroxycarboxylates and their derivatives, and high-sugar lignin sulfonates. Gypsum retarders are mainly used in gypsum building materials, for plastering gypsum and gypsum products.

There are three common types of retarders: organic acids and their soluble salts, alkaline phosphates, and protein retarders.


Sodium Hexametaphosphate retarders mainly include sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium polyphosphate. Sodium hexametaphosphate forms poorly soluble calcium hexametaphosphate with calcium ions in hemihydrate gypsum, which adheres to the surface of hemihydrate gypsum to hinder the hydration and further crystal growth of hemihydrate gypsum.


The role of sodium hexametaphosphate in gypsum retarders


1. Delay the setting time of gypsum and enhance the strength of gypsum.

2. Sodium hexametaphosphate can control the setting time of gypsum, so that gypsum can maintain fluidity for a period of time, which can greatly reduce the waste and loss of gypsum and improve the efficiency of construction.


Since the coagulation and hardening of building gypsum is very rapid, the working time is generally only a dozen minutes or even a few minutes. In order to overcome this shortcoming, the general practice is to add a retarder to the building gypsum cementitious material. At present, sodium hexametaphosphate retarder has become one of the important components of various gypsum-based materials such as plaster, gypsum-based putty, and model gypsum.
