Sodium hexametaphosphate forms poorly soluble calcium hexametaphosphate with calcium ions in hemihydrate gypsum, which adheres to the surface of hemihydrate gypsum to hinder the hydration and further crystal growth of hemihydrate gypsum.

1. Delay the setting time of gypsum and enhance the strength of gypsum.
2. Sodium hexametaphosphate can control the setting time of gypsum, so that gypsum can maintain fluidity for a period of time, which can greatly reduce the waste and loss of gypsum and improve the efficiency of construction.
Since the coagulation and hardening of building gypsum is very rapid, the working time is generally only a dozen minutes or even a few minutes. In order to overcome this shortcoming, the general practice is to add a retarder to the building gypsum cementitious material.
